Holland does require a good deal of baggage. It is also incredibly expensive. Oh... and the surprise they don't mention in that little piece.. for all the wonderful people who welcome you in Holland, there are some people who have been there for a long time.

Indeed, there are people who were thrown in jails before they overthrew Holland and got out. They have fought their entire lives to make Holland a better place. They planted the tulips and built the windmills. What the hell are we non-disabled parents doing in their country? We are trying to invade! We are stealing the resources! We are telling them how to run Holland, trying to make it more like Italy! We are not letting our kids grow up Dutch! We are teaching them to speak ITALIAN!!

Well, then, I am a little crabby today. I have been shocked in recent weeks to find that perhaps I have been tilting at the wrong windmills.

Has anyone else experienced scorn within the disability community?

One and Done

You left out the part about how every upholstered surface in our homes smells like a urinal cake, from our 45-pound children who are unwilling to use the toilet. With only one parent in the workforce and the other at home with our special-needs child, we often have to choose financially between fixing the car that gets us to our therapy and buying a new sofa.

Sorry if I come off as cranky. I've been skipping meals to stretch the grocery budget. That, and to avoid the pain of chewing on neglected dental work. (Note that it's not from gritting my teeth at strangers' comments, for I've got comebacks aplenty for these people. Better they get a resentment than me.)
